A project by children aged 2-5 years old to self-publish a book of stories and support other children affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in India.
Together with a group of parents, I am working to self-publish this book of stories written and illustrated by our children, aged 2-5 years. All profits of the book sales will be going to Karnataka-based charity, Headstreams, in India who aim to bring about positive change in society by promoting free play, open learning and sustainable livelihoods. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they have been working towards child safety and protection and providing education for those not able to be part of distance learning, among many other things.
Inspired by 'Once upon an Alphabet', a book by award-winning children's book author Oliver Jeffers, one of my son's friends was encouraged by her mum (the amazing Anuradha Nambiar) to try making her own version. She found the process and results were great fun!
Since she did this during India's first very strict lockdown, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in March-April 2020, when we were all struggling to entertain our children, she invited my son and all his classmates to create stories of their very own. What started as some afternoon fun and an opportunity for the children to virtually connect with their friends, rapidly transformed into a collection of marvelous, quirky stories!
As 'Tall but Tiny Tales' evolved, it was quickly evident that we wanted to do more than just use the opportunity to pull the stories and artwork into a book. Hearing the daily struggles of those adversely impacted by COVID-19 in India, we have decided to take the initiave one step further. We are publishing the book and donating all the proceeds from the sales to a local NGO, Headstreams, who are supporting children through the pandemic.
Our first copies have arrived! You can buy a copy directly from me by emailing katie@readingpyle.com or through Amazon India where it will be available in September, 2020.
