Totally not my usual genre, but I just loved this book! I'm part of an online book club and periodically there are 'readalongs' which you can take part in. During these, we're given the book in three parts, one part every week for three weeks. After each part, we discuss the book online. It's a really fun way of reading and you get to hear everyone else's suspicions about what is going on and who they like and don't like. The wide-ranging opinions and insights make the reading all the more interesting though it's hard to wait for the next part each week. Especially for this book where I was eager to see what was going to happen next. I can also tell you that none of us guessed the ending in its entirety!
"Will we remember this day in five years' time?"
Synopsis
Hannah and Si are in love and on the same track - that is, until their train divides on the way to a wedding. The next morning, Hannah wakes up in Paris and realises that her boyfriend (and her ticket) are 300 miles away in Amsterdam!
But then Hannah meets Leo on the station platform, and he's everything Si isn't. Spending the day with him in Paris forces Hannah to question how well she really knows herself - and whether, sometimes, you need to go in the wrong direction to find everything you've been looking for...
As per author's website.
"My heart was beating everywhere, in my chest, in my temples; my mouth."
My thoughts
This is just a lovely, light read and maybe just what is needed during this pandemic. The premise of the book is fun and the idea of inadvertently being split off in the wrong section of the train and ending up in the wrong city I just thought was highly amusing! I've always been a little apprehensive by these trains that split in half while you're on them!
The descriptions of Paris are lovely, though did make me miss travelling at the moment. Hannah and Leo certainly manage to see a lot in the time they have in the city! I grew to like Hannah more and more as the story went on and I enjoyed some of the back story to her character. I liked the way Leo brought this out in her though I think we could have learnt more. There is a nice amount of mystery and intrigue which is built up in the story too...what is Hannah going to find when she finally reaches her destination of Amsterdam?
A really lovely book and well worth the read if you're looking for something straight-forward and easy to read!
